In October 1980, MWO Phillips re-enlisted in the Canadian Forces as a Teletype Operator (MOC 212).  During the next two decades, while enjoying a variety of new challenges, he quickly rose through the ranks.  While posted  to 727 Comm Sqn, Goose Bay, NL, he was accelerated promoted to Corporal, and in 1983, while serving at CFS Falconbridge, he successfully completed the Junior Leadership Course.  In 1986 as a Detachment Commander with 1 Canadian Signal Regiment, Kingston, ON, he had his first field experience.  A few years later he was promoted to Master Corporal.  While at CFS Debert, NS, in the early 1990s, MWO Phillips was employed as Node Shift 2 I/C and the Drug/Alcohol coordinator for the Station.  This posting also included an extended UN tour in Bosnia and a promotion to Sergeant.  After Debert he was posted to 709 (Toronto, ON) Communication Regiment for three years as the Regular Force Training Advisor (RFTA).  His experiences as RFTA included Basic Recruit Training and Winter Warfare – his legacy included designing, developing and implementing the first Computer Training Classes for the Regiment.

Following a two-year tour as a Detachment Commander with the ASU in Toronto, ON, MWO Phillips was posted to the Military Aeronautical Communications System (MACS), 8 Wing Trenton, ON.   In October 2002, he was promoted to Warrant Officer and took over as the MACS Warrant.  While there, he completed his SLC at Ste Jean, QC.  Following the short tour at 8 Wing Trenton, MWO Phillips returned to 709 (Toronto) Communication Regiment as the RFTA and the Operations Warrant Officer.  In 2004, he was posted to Canadian Forces Language School (CFLS) where he successfully completed one year of French language training.  Upon promotion to Master Warrant Officer in June 2005,  he was posted to the Canadian Forces Joint Signal Regiment (CFJSR, Kingston, ON), and in July 2007, he took over as the Wing Technical Information Systems (WTIS) MWO at 8 Wing Trenton.
